The RAR originated from the 34th Brigade, which was raised to occupy Japan after World War II. The 34th Brigade was made up of the 65th, 66th, and 67th Infantry Battalions. On November 23, 1948, the battalions were renamed the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions, The Australian Regiment. King George VI granted the regiment the title "Royal" on March 10, 1949.
